Black Dolls Rule! Start Your Collection
Mattel has hit a home run empowering young women of color with their Sheroes collections. With the success of the doll made in the likeness of filmmaker Ava DuVernay ($65.00), it seems more Black dolls are coming on to the market faster than we can snap up the previous one, and if you’re too slow getting yours, then you’re already too late.
[Ages: The Ava Duvernay Doll is for the Adult Collector]
The Ava doll sold out on TheBarbieCollection.com within one hour back in December, according to USA Today. Mattel made fewer than one-thousand dolls as part of their Sheros collection which includes other dolls designed after women of color. After it sold out, you could find the doll on eBay for upwards of $300. This obviously sent a loud message to doll creators that we crave images in our own likeness. We at SBP particularly love the Senegalese Twists on the Ava doll.
[Ages: The Misty Copeland Doll is for ages 6+]
Then next beautiful Black doll to hit the market was the Misty Copeland doll ($29.95) made in the likeness of the first African American female Principal Dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre. We all cheered! It’s our own prima ballerina looking lovely in her Firebird orange tutu by Mattel, also part of their Sheros collection. Although beautiful, many complained the doll’s complexion was too white and barely resembled Misty. The Misty Copeland doll sold out in only 45 minutes after it debut on the Barbie website, according to AJC.com.
Next we have the Uhura doll ($34.95), that debuted in June from Mattel’s Star Trek Collection to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the show. This doll is an exact likeness of the actress Nichelle Nichols in her Star Trek role as a lieutenant. Those who are fans of the hit television series that started in the 60s will appreciate her addition and those who want to collect Black Barbies, you can’t leave her out
[Ages: The Gabby Douglas Doll is for ages 6+]
The latest Sheroes Barbie Doll is the Gabby Douglas doll, which comes out just in time for the 2016 Olympics. It’s complete with her in a stars and stripes leotard. Unfortunately Mattel hasn’t released the price for the Gabby Douglas doll yet but keep your eye out for its release as it is sure to be a collector’s item.
